A Humble Community

August 16, 2015 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Covenant Community

Topic: AM Service Passage: Philippians 2:3–2:11

What should the covenant community of God’s people look like? With all the cultural differences throughout the world, and especially in the consumer mentality that dominates the 21st-century American church, this is a critical question to ask and answer. The Bible begins by telling us that the Church of Jesus Christ is to be molded into the image of Christ. The very first thing we should notice about the person and work of Jesus is humility. Jesus, as the eternal Son of God, voluntarily gave up His position to become man, as a man became a servant. Paul describes this for us in chapter two of Philippians and then reminds us that the path of humility is the path to glory – “he humbled himself…therefore God has highly exalted him.” As a covenant community, we must cultivate humility in our ministries, our relationships, and our lives. This is the way Jesus wants us to be, a “Humble Community” (Philippians 2:3-11)

I. Humility is God’s Design for the Community
A. Valuing Others Above Self
B. Looking to Others Before Self

II. Humility is Jesus’ Example for the Community
A. Jesus Did Not Grasp
B. Jesus Did Not Seek Self-Importance

III. Humility is the Mark of the Community
A. In Following Jesus
B. In Proclaiming Jesus

Questions for consideration: (1) What are the great dangers in your life to being humble? How can you address those? (2) What is the significance for the Church that Jesus humbled Himself in His life and death? (3) How does it help our witness to the world to be a humble community?
