A Good Start

July 23, 2017 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: 1 Samuel

Topic: AM Service Passage: 1 Samuel 11:1–15

The world is a dangerous place. All it takes is a brief look at the news to see that the world is filled with violence, injustice, and hate. The strong prey on the weak and threats abound. This should not surprise followers of Jesus, who told us that “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” (John 15:18) This hatred that comes from the world against Christians is one of the strongest forces that drives us into the arms of the Lord. We know that we are not able to prevail on our own – we need the might of the Almighty God to face such hostility. The Israelites provide us with a concrete example of how this works. So that we would not be confused by spiritual and unseen battles, God has given us the history of Israel with real battles and flesh and blood opposition. The Ammonites came against Israel, filled with arrogance and surety of their victory. Not knowing where to turn, the Israelites called all throughout Israel. They found help in the work of Israel’s new king, but only after the Spirit of God rushed upon him. When God is at work in Israel, you can be sure it is “A Good Start” (1 Samuel 11:1-15)

I. A Dangerous World
A. The World is Hostile
B. The World is Arrogant

II. A Good God
A. Victory Out of Defeat
B. Light Out of Darkness

III. Response to Deliverance
A. Remembering God’s Mercy
B. Renewing Our Commitment

Questions for consideration: (1) What about the world today is easy to see as hostile? What in the world today is hostile, but is not so easy to see that way? (2) What does this passage tell us about God? Why is it important in our daily lives to remember that? (3) How can we try to imitate the character of God in our actions?
