Foolish Unbelief

May 13, 2018 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Romans

Topic: AM Service Passage: Romans 1:21–25

One of the great challenges for the spread of the gospel today is the thinking common among unbelievers that those who believe the gospel are somehow intellectually inferior. Those who mock God and the idea of a Creator are convinced that they are wise and sophisticated in their understanding. We may think this is a recent phenomena, but the Bible tells us otherwise. All men have a knowledge of God through His creation, but they suppress that truth because they are unwilling to submit to God. This unbelief is foolishness, because it denies the reality of the world – that God s the Creator and Sustainer of all things, including all men and women. The result of this foolishness is that people dishonor God and refuse to be thankful for all He has given to them. They would rather worship created things, like animals or themselves, than acknowledge and honor God. This is what happens when people give themselves to “Foolish Unbelief.” (Romans 1:21-25)

I.   Unbelief’s Expression
A.  Dishonoring God
B.  Ingratitude to God

II.  Unbelief’s Substitution
A.  Foolishness for Wisdom
B.  Creature for the Creator

III.  Unbelief’s Result
A.  Delivered to Our Desires
B.  Delivered to Our Idolatry

Questions for consideration:  (1) What does it mean to honor God? How do unbelievers dishonor God? How can believers dishonor God?  (2) What does Paul mean by “wise” in this passage? How is his definition different from the world’s? Why is that important to us?  (3) What is so disturbing about the judgment of God when He allows sinners to continue in the sinner they desire?
